                            AMERICAN

                             APPLE PIE

                                                   
                                                                              serves 8

      ingredients:
  • half cup of sugar (extra sugar for topping)
  • half cup of brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons of plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon 
  • quarter teaspoon of ground ginger
  • quarter teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 7 cups of peeled and thinly sliced cooking apples
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • pastry for a double crust pie 
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 egg white

  • In a small bowl, mix the dry ingredients; set aside. In a large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice.
  • Line a 9-inch pie plate with the pastry; trim pastry even with edge. Fill with apple mixture; dot with butter. Roll out remaining pastry to top the pie. Place over filling. Trim, seal and flute edges. Cut slits in pastry.
  • Beat egg white until foamy; brush over pastry. Sprinkle with sugar. Cover edges loosely with foil.
  • Bake at 375° for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake 20-25 minutes longer or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly. Cool on a wire rack.

    The united states began using such sayings as 'American as apple pie' which means ,typically American' throughout the 19th century American pie symbolized national pride in America.
